Gears of War: E-Day Rebuilt from Scratch in UE5

During Epic's State of Unreal presentation, The Coalition's Studio Technical Director Kate Rayner presented the studio's objectives for Gears of War: E-Day reporting that they had "rebuilt everything from scratch". This may explain the gap since Gears 5 which launched back in 2019.

The Coalition have returned to the dark, gritty visual style where the light and darkness play an important role. With Unreal Engin 5 they have been able to elevate the visuals.

During her presentation Kate showed off a scene from the Pay n' Save superstore in downtown Kalona, the location where Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago are located when the invasion strikes. In previous engine versions they had been limited to three shadow casters but thanks to MegaLights that shipped in UE5.7 they have been able to create 100s of light sources whilst maintaining 60FPS on The Xbox Series X.

Thanks to UE5.7 the studio have been able to interate much faster with things like hardware ray-traced Lumen and have also built out destructible assets all of which help the lighting in Gears of War: E-Day to behave the way you'd expect it to.

The good news for those PC gamers wondering about system requirements of Gears of War: E-Day when it arrives in early October, won't be disappointed with demands of just 12GB of RAM and at least a RTX2060/AMD RX 6600.
